MMPR EVENT: AFRICA FASHION WEEK LONDON

Taking a lil break from music, we headed to West London to the Olympia in Kensington to check out the last day of the annual Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) event which had started on Friday August 8th and was running till Saturday 9th complete with an awards show and an after party. We got there to find the place buzzing with fashion enthusiasts – fashion editors, buyers, press and photographers a mixture of races and a very colourful variety of African prints. We were also there in time to catch the late afternoon catwalk slot…how lucky!!

The afternoon slot had some real wow moments on the catwalk with pieces from London based Ugandan brand Sylvia Owori showing a perfect blend of colours, choice of models and fabric while RAAAH another London based brand showed us why we should scream in jubilation for the edgy but wearable collection that encapsulated the best of colours, stripes, structure and a number of flowy items totally perfect for the summer! It was really a love at first sight moment for us!

The temperature of the day was raised to boiling point when London based Cameroon afrobeat artist Valentine showed us girls what he is made of by giving us 2 of his very hot tracks and revealing excellent dance skills! Pheeeewwwww, it was hot in there!!

Overall, it was worth the effort. The choice of location this year was perfect. It was light, airy and very spacious even though lots was happening it did not feel cramped out at all. A thumbs up to the organising team. Some images below…captured by us!!

FASHION BRAND LOVING: MAISON D’AFIE

Maison d’Afie by Sarah Divine-Garba is a womenswear brand launched a couple of years ago in the UK. Life took over Sarah’s life and this venture was put on hold. With a relocation back to Cameroon, a wedding, a daughter and a relocation to Switzerland done through the time the brand was on hold, Sarah is back!!

The new collection  dubbed “Mami Nyanga” is a subtle romance between “street couture” and tropical flavours giving rise to a few essential classic items.  The collection is made of 8 interchangeable pieces suitable for any occasion. The idea here is to achieve much with less.

They remained true to themselves by infusing tribal accents into the designs with the use of colour and embroidery of tribal art. Most of the work is artisanal with a lot of attention put into the cut.

Quality and practicality were the key drivers in their thought process. The collection features customized prints in silks, and polyester and there is indeed a pick for every lady.

Check them out…
