MMPR BEAUTY: THE HISTORY OF LIPSTICK

Did you know that July 29th was National Lipstick Day? If yes, what shade of the lippie was part of your day? If no, don’t fret you can catch it next year 😉

Well, whether it’s a light pink tint or electric tangerine, you’ll rarely see us women without our lipstick. While it’s a modern essential, it’s actually been around since prehistoric times. In fact, the first signs of lipstick date back to ancient Mesopotamia. Women would crush gemstones and apply them directly to their lips for decoration. Ancient Egyptians would make a mixture of fucus-algin, iodine, and bromine that had a deep red hue- however, it was poisonous and often deadly. (The price of beauty??) The first glamour icon, the Egyptian Cleopatra, would crush carmine beetles and ants to color her lips their signature red. And for a pearlescent finish? Women would add the scales of fish. Oh Yuck!

As time went on, cosmetics (specifically lipstick) advanced in leaps and strides. Arab cosmetologist, Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi, is credited for creating the first tube lipstick. In the 16th Century, lipstick became extremely popular- bright red lips and cheeks were a sign of high fashion. Unfortunately, cosmetics were ultimately banned by religious authorities and said to be “satanic” and reserved for prostitutes. This was the case for many years and lipstick remained unacceptable and brazen.

In 1880, the term “lipstick” became popular as the French cosmetic company Guerlain manufactured the first commercial version. It was made from deer tallow, castor oil, and beeswax. By the 1920s, lipstick was not only mainstream- but totally paramount. Since becoming an industry all its own, lipstick has undergone many changes. Original colours were typically slight variations of red, and packaging was minimal. The product was often applied with a lip brush. Of course, today- lipstick comes in all shapes, sizes, applicators, and colours. It’s gone through many social revelations (What time of day is appropriate to apply it? Can you get a job if you wear lipstick?) and is an iconic statement- from Marilyn’s classic red to the black lip favoured in goth and punk subcultures.

Which colours/brands of lipstick are your current favs? We love…see below!

MMPR FOCUS: A WEEKEND IN PARIS

This last weekend was a mini getaway “break” and work weekend for Cynthia our London PR girl as she jetted off to sunny Paris in France. Some sight seeing was definitely on the cards as well as a quick appointment to catch up with an old client who would like another short term PR partnership following her new collection launch. The “Antikod” luxury beauty and fashion event too was happening on the other side of town in the leafy bourgeoisie Parisian suburbs of Issy les Moulineaux organised by French TV host and entrepreneur Hapsatou Sy.

So sightseeing done, catchup with old client also done on the superb backdrop of the “Antikod” show which was a fashionista’s dream event at the fabulous La Maison Ile Saint Germain complete with its own boat entrance space …there were fashion items by designers including renowned Elie Kuame, there were shoes by My Miry by Sara Coulibaly, there was beauty and massage with a hammam room to get a good scrub and feel the stress wear away…there were PIXL bags…there was music, there were canapĂ©s and there were cocktails and other drinks…what more could a girl want!! Nada, just plain enjoyment of all the facilities! Check out her weekend in pictures.

SNOOP STYLE SERIES: IN MY BAG (POST ONE)

Over in London this weekend, we have been getting Summery Spring filled days with a high degree of sunshine than usual this season. We are not complaining though as this means it is time to get that sun cream, a pair of shades and head outdoors.

While enjoying this awesome weather, what better thing to do than to go all CIA on some of our friends by asking them to reveal what exactly they carry in their handbags and why. Wanna snoop with us and get the scoop? Okay, c’mon lets snoop with our new fun series entitled #InMyBag.

For the past one month, these are the items which have consistently made Yaya’s handbag…what are they and why does she carry them? She tells us why!

Image

I always have:-

~Jo Malone fragrance. No matter what I always like smelling nice. This was a birthday gift two birthdays ago from my sister and although it is almost coming to its end it does smell amazing and is the right thing to have if you use public bathrooms.

~My hair brush because a sister always needs her edges right and just in case the wind is wild I make sure I have a comb or this little brush.

~My Always protection guard female pad. Now, I think everyone must have one pad or panty liner in their handbag. Forget about regular periods every now and then a leak may surprise you. I must have my pad!

~I have Angel by Thierry Mugler hand lotion and shower gel tubes. I always need lotion for my hands and also prepare for the eventuality that I am somewhere and I get dirty hands and I must wash.

~The plastic spoon I carry sometimes for when I want to eat something and there is no spoon available.

~My MAC finisher powder and my MAC candy yum yum lipstick. Ok I swear that you will never ever see me and my purse without my MAC powder for when your make up gets oily or smudged and you must touch up. I always need my powder as I also have very oily skin.

~The Daniel plan book is what I’m reading for lent and the black book is my journal. I started journalling over a year ago and if you read my blog, I have a post on journalling your thoughts and prayers every time.

~I carry lots of papers but that’s usually from my work. The business cards you see where dropped in my bag last week from the different fabric stores I visited with my sister.

~The grey little bag is my make-up bag or more like a little purse is where I keep hair rubber bands and lip gloss or tissue or safety pins and some coins. It has everything in it and even a travel size toothbrush and my dental floss.

~ Let’s just say Yaya goes nowhere without her phone and ipad. I use my ipad for pics, notes and on the go Internet. I cannot do without my ipad mini ever!

So that is it! Our first snooping post for you. Watch out for more handbags and their contents right here…women will be women!!
